Calahonda, Mijas & La Cala de Mijas
Calahonda lies in the Municipality of Mijas in the province of Málaga, Andalusia.
Situated midway between the larger coastal towns of Fuengirola to the east, and Marbella to the west, it is only a 25 minute drive along the coast from Malaga airport. Calahonda has been a favourite location for many years for both it´s visitors and permanent residents being self sufficient in all amenities and facilities. It is also connected by a stunning coastal boardwalk stretching 5.5 km along the Mediterranean shores from the village of La Cala to the East and to the pretty marina of Cabopino to the west.
Much of Calahonda was developed and established by 2002. It continued to grow but only on land that was available further inland which now forms upper Calahonda. This makes the project of El Romeral truly unique as it is the first new modern project of this type to be built in many years on land remaining so close to the main central heart and is therefore highly desirable!
El Romeral is ideally located in lower Calahonda with easy access to public transport and perfect for those who prefer to leave the car behind! The beaches too are a stones throw away.
Within an easy five minutes walking of El Romeral you will find a variety bars and restaurants to suit all pockets and tastes.
For shopping, Los Olivos is a commercial centre which is right on the doorstep. Here you will find a large Supermarket and plenty of facilities including banks, newsagents and an excellent cafe. There is a also small park opposite.
Within five walking minutes is El Zoco where you can shop for all your daily needs not only in the larger supermarkets but also a variety of local specialist shops which cater for all nationalities. Here you will find the post office, local ironmongers, banks, newsagents, and a variety of shopping from furniture stores to florists! There is also a weekly market held at Calypso, the area adjacent to El Zoco. Within 10 minutes walking are even further amenities. Los Jarales and Campanario continue to offer the visitor even more choice.
Torre De Calahonda is a 16th century watchtower, one of several remaining today which were built to protect the coast warning of enemy ships passing through to Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Marbella. The coast today as we know it is invaded only by those seeking sun and relaxation.
The new boardwalk that runs for a distance of 5.5km is ideal for enjoying anything from an early morning jog to a more meandering stroll into the evening sunset. It is peppered by beachside eateries with their traditional sardines and tasty fresh fish to more lively beach restaurants with live music and entertainment throughout the year. Plenty of areas also to hire sun beds and spend lazy days at the beach and all within walking distance!
It is a relatively low density unspoilt stretch of coast and a variety of birdlife and plant life add interest to exploring this part of the mediterranean coast.
For those who love their sport there is a wide variety on offer locally and incredibly close to El Romeral.
For Golfers, La Siesta is an undulating 9 hole, par 3 course in the heart of Calahonda with a driving range and popular club house. Close by are two further courses of 18 holes at Cabopino and Miraflores with further courses within a fifteen minute drive to La Cala and towards Marbella.
Tennis enthusiasts can join in a great standard of play at Club Del Sol with 9 clay courts, 3 brand new plexi cushion courts, 4 paddle courts, 4 squash courts and a 450 m2 fully air-conditioned gym. Outside there’s a relaxing terrace. There is also an excellent tennis club at Miraflores within five minutes drive of El Romeral.
There is a fully equipped fitness centre, Alhamar De Calahonda which also offers every range of classes from yoga to kick boxing. There are green spaces with protected forest areas perfect for walking, as well as public parks with children’s play areas.
